5 Signs Your Pet Is Living Their Best Life

5 Signs Your Pet Is Living Their Best Life

We all want to know our pets are genuinely happy, not just getting by. The tricky part is that pets can't just tell us how they're feeling — so we have to read the signs instead. Here are five of the clearest ones to look out for.

1. A coat that actually shines

A soft, glossy coat is one of the simplest tells of good health. Dull, flaky, or thinning fur often points to something worth mentioning to your vet, whether that's diet, stress, or something else entirely.

2. They're properly, deeply asleep

Pets that feel safe and comfortable sleep deeply — twitching paws, soft snoring, the works. A pet that's constantly alert, repositioning, or reluctant to settle may be telling you something about their environment, whether that's an uncomfortable bed, noise, or general anxiety.

3. Genuine excitement, not just tolerance

There's a difference between a dog that puts up with a walk and a dog that loses its mind with joy at the sight of the lead. That spark of genuine enthusiasm for the things they love — walks, playtime, mealtimes — is a strong sign all is well.

4. A healthy appetite (but not a desperate one)

Eating well, at a steady pace, without begging constantly between meals, usually points to a pet that's comfortable and well cared for. Sudden changes in appetite in either direction are usually worth a second look.

5. They come back to you

Whether it's a cat choosing your lap over the sofa, or a dog checking in on a walk without being called, pets that are thriving tend to actively seek out their people. That's not neediness — it's trust, and it's one of the nicest signs there is.

None of these signs exist in isolation, and every pet has an off day now and then. But if you're seeing most of these regularly, you're doing something right.
